Project Profile
Project: Elevated Pipe Rack
Location: Illinois
Project Scope: INGENIIs engineers performed all structural engineering
for the design of a 1000 foot long pipe rack over an existing pipeway at a major Midwest
refinery. Design criteria required that supports for the new structure be located so as
not to interfere with the numerous existing pipes and valve access platforms. The
structure was a combination of longitudinal braced frame and lateral rigid frames with
clear spans up to forty feet. The design was accomplished utilizing three-dimensional
structural engineering software in order to accurately account for the large thermal
movement of the structure, and to optimize the steel framing tonnage due to the large
number of unique rigid frames. The design of all foundations and structural steel
framing was completed in a two month period to meet an aggressive construction schedule.
